A Brief History of San Bernardino CA

San Bernardino has a very colorful history beginning at the start of the 19th century when Spanish missionaries settled in the region. They chose the fertile valley situated against the majestic mountain range as an outpost, and from there they traveled across all of California spreading their beliefs and customs to various Indian tribes, who had been there since the beginning, much in the same way that executive search firms, Toronto based spread their work to other cities.

The primary concern of the missionaries was the spiritual well being of the Indians; yet they also showed concern for their material well being and survival. The missionaries showed their peaceful friends how to transfer water down from the Mill creek as well as the most effective ways to plant and irrigate crops. As the mission flourished, so did the Indians and their unique keel types, hunting methods and belief systems. The missionaries soon established ranches and farms across the region and were able to live in harmony with the native Indians for quite some time.

There were, however, a few threats to the happy and simple life on the ranches, and the biggest one was the horse and cattle-stealing raids that tribes of desert Indians performed. These attacks were done at night under the light of a full moon and they could easily wipe out a rancher's entire herd. Because of this many ranchos moved to other areas since they were losing too much to the raids and were powerless to stop it. The raids continued until 1851, when a company of 500 or more Mormons arrived in the valley. They made camp at the mouth of a creek that flowed through the valley to the Santa Ana River. The beauty of this riverside region rivals many Oakville wedding sites and it was inspiring to the new settlers.

With the sheer abundance of water, the dense and lush growth of willows, cottonwoods and sycamores, as well as crops growing on the hillside, these settlers were overjoyed with their new location. They chose to name the stream Lytle Creek after their charismatic leader, Captain Andrew Lylte. The influx of Mormon settlers brought a new moral center to the settlement and it soon became law that there was to be no drinking, gambling or lewd conduct whatsoever. Shortly thereafter gold was discovered to be in abundance in the Holcomb Valley and in the 1860s people from miles around came to the region to try to strike it rich. Many of these individuals did get rich in this endeavor and stayed in the area to start their new life in the beautiful valley. These settlers quickly grew into large families that were well established.

As the years passed, San Bernardino saw good times as well as bad; but mostly the residents flourished along with the growing town. Today it has grown into a civilized and diverse urban center and remains a modern community with a decidedly bright future. There are many businesses and trades that have found their place in San Bernardino, from upscale retail to companies that produce specialized aqua finishing solutions. The pride and vitality of the first pioneers is still evident in the town and is reflected in the pride that these citizens take in their community.
